How to apply for a marine licence: step by step
Check what you need to do to apply for a marine licence.
1. Check if you need a licence
Some activities need a licence from us, others are exempt.

You can get two hours of free advice from us before you apply.
5. Prepare your application

6. Consult with others
Contact other organisations to tell them about your proposals. Keep copies of your correspondence. You will need it for your application.

We also encourage pre-application engagement with communities if you think your project could have general public interest.
7. Check if you need other permits from us
If the activity is within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) or you access it via a SSSI then you need permission from us. Find more information on our SSSI.
If you want to carry out works in, over, under or near a main river, or in a flood plain or flood defence (including a sea defence), you may need to apply for flood risk activity permit.
Certain species in Welsh marine waters and on land are European Protected Species (EPS). You will need a licence from us if they are affected by your activity. Find out more about European Protected Species licences.
