Use this service to submit a reference for someone applying for a species licence.

Who can give a reference

To give a reference you must have:

  • read the licence application form you are supporting
  • experience working with the species, methods and equipment included in the application
  • held a relevant species licence for at least two years
  • experience of the applicant's work for at least one survey season

If you are giving a reference for someone applying to handle bats, you must also:

  • hold a licence to handle bats
  • have observed the applicant handling bats

Before you start

You need to tell us:

  • your contact details
  • the name of the applicant
  • about the species licence you held 
  • your bat licence number (if the application involves bat handling)
  • your experience and skills 
  • how you know the applicant
  • how long you have known them
  • the applicant's skills and experience
  • why you believe the applicant is competent
  • why you think the applicant is suitable
  • whether the applicant has given an accurate account of their skills, knowledge and experience
